Beautiful makeup always starts with skincare and finding your dream finish is the perfect first step for any makeup application.
I have tried so many foundations on the market for my skin and my clients. What I used when I was a teenager is definitely different than what I use as a woman in my mid 30's. I find my skin is craving more water and less powder. Don't get me wrong, I'm still oily...just not as oily as I used to be 3 years ago.
We all want something that doesn't crease, will last all day and keep us looking flawless like Beyoncé. With so many options of foundation out there. How do you know which one to choose? Matte, Semi-Matte, Dewy or Sheer. Maybe you want to have that glow from with in look or a full coverage smudge proof makeup look. Whatever the case maybe you want to choose a finish that will make you look beautiful and not age you. Below you will find helpful tips to make sure you are glowing and not dull.
Oily Skin
I have a love hate relationship with this skin type. Mostly because I have it! If you have oily skin you know what I mean. Sometimes I can look snatched and other days I can look like a Swedish Meatball fresh out the oven on a Hot Summer day. The one good thing that makes me thankful for my skin type is that, we tend to have less wrinkles and age spots(so i guess that's a win).
The problem that most of us face that have oily skin is that we have blemishes and acne. So finding a foundation that is going to be full coverage enough, not look cakey and stay put all day at the same time can be tricky.
Pro tip: find a foundation that is long wearing and oil free. You want to look for foundations that say Matte or Semi-matte on the bottle.
Este Lauder Double Wear is the perfect foundation it is 24 hour wear, improves uneven texture. This foundation is perfect on hot summer days and comes in over 40 shades.
Nars Soft Matte is transfer proof. This foundation helps to hydrate and maintain moisture balance. has a 16 hour wear.
Maybelline Fit Me has micro powders that helps control oils for a natural semi matte finish. Tested by dermatologist, which makes it perfect for sensitive skin.
Dry Skin
The most common thing I see from peopled with dry skin is that they prefer not to wear product on their skin, because it's so dry. However, this can actually be causing more harm to your skin than you know. A common sign of dry skin is flaky-ness, dry patches, enlarged pores and redness.
Pro Tip: Find a foundation that is rich in moisturizing agents and free of harsh dyes or chemicals. The labels of this type will typically say radiant or luminous on the bottle. Always rember with this skin type is Less in more!
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk You can not think of radiant foundation whiteout thinking of Armani! this foundation has a beautiful natural finish and has buildable coverage. It is also perfect for creating a filter like effect in person and in pictures.
Makeup Forever Reboot is perfect if you want glowy healthy looking skin, It has hyaluronic acid, which aids in plumping the skin and providing skin with moisture throughout the day,
Mature Skin
The skincare you used in your 20's and 30's will not be the same that you use in your 50's & 60's. The same thing applies to your foundation. To keep you looking as fine as wine, your foundation should add glow to your skin and not take it away. Mature skin is typically on the drier side, but it can by oily to. You want to avoid powder as much as you can, because it can emphasize texture and lines.
Pro tip: Ingredients with vitamin e and hyaluronic acid work best for mature skin. thin liquid and cream base makeup is my go to for all of my clients. You want to avoid products that contain minerals, as they tend to be heavier.
Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation moisturizes, brightens and smooths uneven skin. I love this foundation and so does my mom. My mother swears by Charlotte and so do I. The only problem I have with this foundation is that the shade range is limited, but if you can find your shade...you will be happy with the results.
Graftobian Cream Foundation is a light weight, highly pigmented formula. it has a airbrush finish that photographs beautifully. It is a pro brand, so a little goes a long way.
Teen
Teenagers have to battle hormones which causes acnes, but it's also supple, free of wrinkles and full of collagen.
Pro Tip: You want a foundation that enhances what you already have, instead of hiding it. You want to avoid phthalates, parabens, and triclosan, as they have been known to interfere with hormones and have been linked to harmful side effects.
Nars Tinted Moisturizer lightweight and is buildable. This is my go to for all of my seniors who are taking Senior pictures. although this product has spf30, it doesn't cause flashback. Nars tinted moisturizer gives a brighter complexion and is packed with skincare.
Revlon Photo Finish Candid medium coverage and goes on like a moisturizer. Shields against environmental damage including anti-pollution, antioxidant, and anti-blue light. Made without oils, parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes and fragrances
Combination
Finding a foundation for combo skin can be difficult. You are either be more on the oily side or more on the dry side. So finding the right balance is key.
Pro tip: opt for products without fragrance or dyes as these can irritate the dry areas. You also want to choose a foundation that has buildable coverage. You apply more in the t-zone are and less on the cheek are(if you are dry)
Fenty Beauty Pro Filter this foundation is perfect for combo skin to normal, helps to minimize the appearance of pores and comes in over 40shades.
Always remember to:
Look at your skin are you dry, oily, mature, teen or etc.?
Try it out for 10 days (some foundations may seem like they are magic the first time you have it on)
What are you trying to achieve? Do you want glowing skin or a matte finish?
Decide on your coverage (natural, semi matte or luminous).
Don't assume that you automatically need full coverage foundation.
Samples are your bestfriend( Go to Sephora and grab as many foundation samples that you can)
